Fibroids in Perimenopause, Faith, and the Wake-Up Call I Didn’t See Coming

Updated: Apr 3

I still remember the day like it was yesterday.

Woman reflecting outdoors sharing her fibroid journey during perimenopause

I went in for what I thought was just another routine check and came out with a diagnosis I had never heard explained to me before.

“You have a fibroid factory in there.”

Say what?

Ma’am… my body had apparently opened a full-blown operating fibroid warehouse… and nobody sent me a memo.

Now here’s the part that still gets me. I had been going to regular checkups.

I had even had surgery before.

And yet somehow… this had been quietly growing inside me.

The Reality So Many Women Live

If you’ve ever dealt with uterine fibroids, especially fibroids during perimenopause, you already know:

  • The heavy bleeding that disrupts your life

  • The fatigue that no amount of rest seems to fix

  • The bloating that makes you question your own body

  • The emotional toll nobody prepares you for

Some days, it felt like my body was running my life instead of me living it.

And let’s talk about it…

For many of us, especially Black women, this isn’t rare. It’s common. Too common.

Yet somehow, it’s still not talked about enough.

What’s Really Going On

Fibroids are non-cancerous growths in the uterus, often influenced by hormones, especially estrogen dominance.

And here’s where perimenopause enters the room… uninvited.

During perimenopause, hormones begin to decline and fluctuate wildly.

This means:

  • Progesterone often decreases first

  • Estrogen can spike before it drops

  • The imbalance can fuel fibroid growth

So, while everyone’s talking about hot flashes, some of us are over here dealing with hemorrhaging cycles and exhaustion.

My Mission To Start Reclaiming My Body

I was on a mission of healing my body... naturally.

I started growing my own food and became the label reading, google searching queen. I went into full ‘let me fix this naturally’ mode.

  • Eliminated ultra-processed foods that disrupt hormones. I had already been on that journey but went into full overhaul mode.

  • Added iron-rich foods (think leafy greens, lentils, beets) and anti-inflammatory support (berries, turmeric, ginger tea)

  • Started seed cycling and adding healthy fats for hormone support

  • Managed stress (as best I could because cortisol affects estrogen balance too, but that’s a whole other story)

  • Prioritized sleep like it was sacred (because it is)

But Let Me Tell You What Didn’t Change

Now let me be real with you…

I did the things.

I cleaned up my diet.I added the greens. I drank the teas. I tried to reduce stress (well… as much as life would allow).

And yes, my overall health improved.

I felt better in my body. More energy. More awareness.

But my fibroids?

They didn’t budge.

Not shrink.

Not shift.

Not even a little.

Because now I’m doing “everything right” and still not getting the results I thought I was supposed to get.

Maybe you find yourself in this same situation and you start to wonder:

  • “Am I doing something wrong?”

  • “Why isn’t this working for me?”

  • “Is my body just broken?”

Let me gently free you right here:

No.

You are not doing anything wrong. The conversation has just been incomplete.

Let’s Tell the Whole Truth About Uterine Fibroids

Fibroids are complex. Yes, hormones play a role but that’s not the whole story.

We’re also looking at:

  • Genetics (especially for women of African descent)

  • Fibroid blood supply (angiogenesis)

  • Inflammation and immune response

  • Environmental exposures (endocrine disruptors)

So, while nutrition and lifestyle shifts are powerful, they may support your body without necessarily shrinking existing fibroids.

And nobody told us that part.

Faith Check: When Effort Doesn’t Equal Outcome

This is where faith had to meet reality for me.

Because I wanted a formula: “Do this → get that result.”

But healing didn’t work like that.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding…”

Proverbs 3:5

Sometimes the assignment isn’t just fixing the body, it’s learning how to walk with God through the process. Even when the outcome doesn’t look like what we expected.

What I Had to Shift (And What I Want You to Know)

Instead of asking:“Why didn’t this work?”

I started asking:“What does my body need now?”

That shift changed everything. Because healing became less about chasing a cure and more about supporting my body wisely and advocating for myself boldly.

Let’s Talk Options Without Fear or Shame

For some women, support looks like:

  • Continued lifestyle and nutrition work

  • Monitoring and watchful waiting

  • Exploring procedures or surgical options

And let’s remove the stigma here (and this is where I got stuck):

Choosing medical intervention is not failure, it’s wisdom when needed.

You can be holistic and informed. Faith-filled and proactive.

If you’ve been doing all the “right” things and your fibroids haven’t changed,

You are not the problem.

You are a woman navigating a condition that deserves more honest conversations, better research, and deeper support.

If this is your story too, stay with me. We’re just getting started with this conversation.

I’ll be sharing this story and more. Follow along here: My Perimenopause Story
